A modern kitchen is best characterized by simple shapes and colors, intelligent solutions and unconventional materials, that are both functional and innovative at the same time.
Everything you need to design a perfectly modern kitchen, you are going to find in this guide. Additionally, we’llshow you some of the most beautiful kitchens out there that can become your inspiration in creating your very own gem of a kitchen.
Plan Your Kitchen Right!
Creating a kitchen of modern and functional character demands quite a doze of planning ahead. First of all, you have to settle for a budget you are are going to put into it. Depending of the amount of money at your disposal, you can decide what kind of kitchen appliances are in our area of interest. When buying things like a fridge, dishwasher, freezer or oven, it is always worth it to bid on quality. Decent appliances are going to serve us better, and longer. Considering how many times during an average day we use the kitchen, such investment is going to pay off pretty fast!
Selecting the correct materials for your kitchen is usually a matter of your personal situation. Families with small children, for example, should consider durable and resistant materials, such as granite. For the fans of nature and more rustic style, a more suitable option could be decks made of solid wood, and for those looking for some ultra modern materials, the best choice could be the imitation of concrete or glossy metal.
After estimating your budget, do the same with the number of materials that you are going to use, while creating a modern kitchen; it is time to think about the shape of it. Is the kitchen going to be an open one? Or maybe it is time to remove the wall, that is separating your kitchen from the living room, and follow the latest trends like that? How about an island?
If the island is up your alley, the important thing is to plan its design right away, as it determines the final shape of your kitchen. The main advantage of having a kitchen island is not only the extra space it provides, but also shortening the walking distance between different places in your kitchen. In some cases, the island can also be used as a table, which helps mixing the role of a kitchen and a dining room.
Below you can see an example of a kitchen island that is the focal point in the kitchen.
No modern kitchen would be so desired if it wasn’t for the inventive places for keeping the cooking tools. All pots, pans, cutlery, spices or the actual food have to be kept somewhere. The amount of kitchen stuff can be overwhelming, and if we do not think about them before we start designing a kitchen, we may very well end up keeping our glasses in a living room. We do not want that to happen, do we? Remember – in a modern kitchen, there is no place for chaos and disorder.
Thanks to the creativity of present designers, we now have a lot of options to create capacious spaces for storage. Pay attention to the photograph attached – notice the endless shelves, cupboards and drawers designed with the TIP-ON system. That is the very heart of a modern kitchen – a synergy between design and usability.
An interesting approach at the subject of keeping kitchen tools is presented to you in this photo. No need to hide your pots if you can use them as decoration. Some of the kitchen vessels are worth the exposure, usually those of higher aesthetic value, or made of more precious materials, like copper. Also, look at all the free space after removing some of the shelves in favor of open decks.
Another way to enhance the modern feeling of your kitchen, is to remove the plain looking, ordinary furniture and bring in the works of simplistic art that present designers offer you. Futuristic forms add to the individual character, carrying your kitchen to a whole different dimension. One of the tools at your disposal, to achieve that level of modern feeling, is causing apparent mismatch. Just do not mistake it with chaos and random mess, those are not the same things. Go crazy with style, mix the styles, but do not overdo it.
Our final tip to you is to use contradicting colors and patterns, as well as diverse materials. Most commonly, when designing a modern kitchen, try to apply sharp transitions. As presented to you in the picture, do not try to softly change colors, mixing them in sort of a blur, but instead use definite transitions, where one color just rapidly ends and another one begins. And just look how well wood, usually linked to more old-fashioned styles, mends with the modern white drawers, in the photo below!
Illuminating a Modern Kitchen
One thing we did not cover yet is the illumination. You are simply not going to acquire the demanded modern look, if your kitchen is lightened up in an old-fashioned, plain way. A proper technology and design of your light sources can make or break the entire concept. Lets see what option do we have, and hope something catches your attention.
On the market you can find a lot of different illumination systems. The halogen bulbs are widely considered to be top of the line, and most widely used solution. But they do have their downsides – they heat up rather fast, they can burn out fast, and despite being seen as efficient, you can do better than that. What is a growing alternative, and slowly pushing them out of the kitchen market, are the LED systems. You do not need to replace those very often, because their life span is much longer (up to 50 000 hours), they do not heat up and they use up almost no energy. When picking those, the most important things to pay attention to are the light stream (amount of lumens), the tone of light and the effective life of the lights. Remember that LED bulbs of low quality can glow less bright over time.
The top of the line LED systems, that are pretty much crucial to modern illumination, are LED tapes. These are just some of the solutions, available outright for your kitchen. Very easy to install too!
Under cabinet lighting.
One of the solutions is the under cabinet lighting. They are growing in popularity because of their attractive price, aesthetics, ease of usage and – which is probably most important- the option to apply to any shape and forum of your kitchen furniture. A LED tape can be cut every 10 centimeters or even less, in some cases, and then applied with adhesive tape, which is on the back, to any surface.
Bored with your dull, gray kitchen? Just look at that illuminated countertop. Same technology, infinite solutions. You can achieve the same effect placing a led tape on your suspended ceiling!
We would love to present to you all of the possibilites of LED light in modern kitchens, but unfortunately we would need an entire blog dedicated to that. Why? Because the possibilites are endless – all you have you do, granted you want to install it yourself, is buy a special LED tape or LED clips and attach them under a cabinet or a glass, or anywhere you want. Have fun with it, and who knows? Maybe its your photos that are going to be used as inspiration on blogs, in near future?
We hope that this guide is enough to help you make up your mind about a kitchen remodelling. While, usually, not cheap, overhauling your kitchen is one of the most satisfying ares of a house to renew. It is also a great way to improve your everyday mood, as thats the place where we all spend the most of our time. So wait no longer, get to it, and take joy from your very own, brand new, modern kitchen.
